State Major Projects

Each state has a Major Project that focuses charitable efforts on causes that matter most to local communities. Here are the three states John will walk through:

California-Hawaii Elks Major Project

Supporting Children with Disabilities Since 1950

The California-Hawaii Elks Major Project, Inc. (CHEMPI) pledges its commitment to addressing the unmet needs of children with disabilities throughout California and Hawaii by developing supporting services at no cost to families and without discrimination.

This unique program funds 32 paid therapists and preschool vision screeners who travel, sometimes great distances, to help children get the care they need when no other organizations can or will.

  • Professional therapists providing in-home services
  • Preschool vision screening to catch early signs of amblyopia ("Lazy Eye")
  • The Purple Pig fundraising program supports all services

Oregon Elks E.Y.E.S. Program

Oregon Elks E.Y.E.S. Program

Helping children see a brighter future through investment in research and treatment of pediatric eye conditions

The Elks Youth Eye Serve (E.Y.E.S.) began in 1949 when Oregon Elks raised $2,000 for an oximeter for a baby whose father was an Oregon Elk. This generosity established the Elks Children's Eye Clinic, which has grown for over 75 years.

In December 2020, thanks to a $20 million pledge from the Oregon Elks, a new $50 million, 60,000 square foot facility opened—the nation's first freestanding pediatric eye clinic. The unique design accommodates all visual abilities with contrasting colors and child-friendly spaces.

  • World-renowned pediatric ophthalmologists
  • Retinopathy of prematurity telemedicine program
  • Elk volunteers donate thousands of hours annually

Washington Elks Therapy Program for Children

Home-Based Therapy Since 1954

Since 1954, the Washington Elks Therapy Program for Children has provided home-based occupational and physical therapy to children from birth to age 21 with developmental delays or physical disabilities - all at no cost to families served.

From a single therapist covering the entire state over 65 years ago, the program has evolved into a vital part of the statewide healthcare community. Today, up to fifteen therapists serve approximately 25 children each across therapy units located throughout Washington State.

  • 86% of contributions go directly to therapy
  • Priority given to medically fragile infants and young children
  • No Elks affiliation required for eligibility
